The author provides a much-needed summary of the background of William Hall-Walker, his family, and their business connections in Liverpool, as well as with the horse breeding industry in Ireland and Britain. Drawing on several primary sources, the chapter outlines the development of Tully Stud in Kildare under Hall-Walker’s stewardship and his foresight in lobbying the British government, which culminated in the ‘gift’ of his racing establishment for the creation of a National Stud Farm to provide the industry with a stronger and robust platform. Politics is a central theme throughout the chapter, with considerable opposition within the British Parliament regarding the possibilities of a new National Stud Farm. Other social issues, such as the stigma of gambling that marred society, are analysed to foster a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between politics and sport.
