Shortly before his death in 1978, Henry Corbin sought to relaunch “the combat for the soul of the world” by convening a session of the University of Saint John of Jerusalem, a group he had founded with a few close friends. This session took place after his passing—the first without him—yet his spiritual presence was strongly felt through the inspiration it carried. The “soul of the world” represents the presence of God in the world, mediating between God and man, while preserving the divine’s transcendence and avoiding its conflation with nature. By reinterpreting this Neoplatonic concept through the lens of Islamic philosophical traditions, Corbin aimed to counter the reductionism of modern thought, which often severs spirituality from intellectual inquiry. I seek to situate Corbin within the broader history of mystical and philosophical Neoplatonism, both ancient and contemporary—a path rarely explored in today’s intellectual landscape. Having walked this path myself, with Corbin as an inspiring companion, I aim to illuminate the depth and significance of his contributions.
