While there are many different ways we could think about thriving or living a good life, it is hard to imagine anyone able to thrive if their mind and body are disconnected or imbalanced. Meditation, yoga, breathwork, progressive muscle relaxation, massage, visualization, journaling, and many other techniques are designed to achieve harmonious interplay between mind and body. However, most mind-body techniques start at a certain point of entry into the mind-body dynamic. Top-down interventions, like meditation and visualization, begin conscious and intentional mental activities that engage us mentally with a focus on our thoughts and emotions. Their neurological activity in turn influences the endocrine and nervous system, with meaningful changes within our body. In contrast, bottom-up interventions involve the transmission of sensory information from the periphery (like sensory organs or tissues) to higher levels of the nervous system, such as the brain. Activities centered on breathing and physical movements such as yoga, tai chi, and breathwork stimulate the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, resulting in changes to our psychological states. The chapter ends with an overview of mind-body approaches to mental health therapy, which often include some traditional psychotherapy methods along with holistic and mind-body approaches, such as holistic psychotherapy, somatic therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

摘要
