Wellness is experienced when we are in mental, social, and physical good health. It is not only the absence of illness and disability but also when we perceive ourselves to be thriving and well. Mind-body wellness is an approach within this overall framework that emphasizes balance and harmony between the mind and body as well as wholeness of being. The emphasis of this chapter is that mind-body wellness is an individual approach to well-being, not a prescribed or rigid way of life, resulting in a personal philosophy and practice of mind-body wellness. This chapter begins with definitions of different aspects of wellness and an exploration of the philosophy and attitudes inherent in developing a personal approach to well-being. Then we explore the eight dimensions of wellness (social, physical, emotional, career, intellectual, environmental, spiritual, and financial), which are used as an organizing structure for the content of the book. Finally, the major models of wellness will be examined, including the PERMA and PERMA+ models, Dunn’s model of high-level wellness, and the bioecological model.
