Wellness in Relationships and Social Situations
摘要
Social interactions are a central aspect of the human experience, and it is hard to overstate just how important social connections are for our sense of well-being. The benefits of positive and consistent affiliation with others across the lifespan are both physical and mental, including reduced all-cause mortality, reduced susceptibility to mood disorders and other mental illnesses, positive cognitive stimulation, emotional support, and the good feelings engendered by attention from others. While parents and family are our first relationship setting, as we progress through life friendship, dating, and marriage or other significant romantic relationships become part of the fabric of our relational well-being. Ways to support positive relationships across all of these categories include communication, respect, trust, mutual support, intimacy and disclosure, and authenticity. On the other hand, interpersonal conflict is an inevitable result of interacting with other people. Strategies to deal with interpersonal conflict include practicing conflict prevention, evaluating alternatives to conflict, being in control of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and engaging people with understanding and empathy.
