The Mind-Body Connection
摘要
The idea that the mind and the body work together to create human well-being is no longer at the fringes of academia, and many degrees and certificates with a wellness emphasis have been developed at major universities. Evidence-based courses in mind-body wellness typically explore the ways in which our assumptions and beliefs about the interconnection of mind and body relate to how we view health and illness. Research points to a dynamic interconnectivity of mind and body processes that can support human wellness and can be a point of intervention for practices that improve well-being. This chapter begins with a discussion of the philosophical and practical approaches to mind-body wellness, including examples of research on the gut microbiome, allostatic load, and inflammation and their implications for understanding mind-body processes. The chapter proceeds with differentiating a wellness approach from the medical model and provides an outline of the various terms that encompass a mind-body approach, such as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), integrative medicine, and mind-body medicine. The chapter ends with a brief review of practice settings and employment related to mind-body wellness.
