Developing and Integrating a Common Vocabulary into Staff Training Practices
摘要
A technical vocabulary may be helpful for scientific communication; however, it may not be advantageous in all settings. In staff training, for example, developing a common vocabulary between trainers and trainees so the same terms occasion the same responses can help ensure teaching procedures are implemented with fidelity. Further, it may enhance the efficiency of staff training. Cihon et al. (2016; International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education, 9, 337–348) provided a case example of how a shared vocabulary, grounded in plain English, was developed and shared among behavior-analytic service providers employed by a large public school system. They provided details regarding how they developed the sample terms and definitions, including examples and non-examples; however, additional details related to developing a shared vocabulary among staff members and supervisors may be helpful for those working in clinical settings. In this chapter, we discuss and elaborate on some of the nuances related to developing a common vocabulary among clinical teams, including the benefits of developing a common vocabulary and its importance with respect to staff training. We will provide additional examples and elaborate on the methods described by Cihon and colleagues to develop and integrate a common vocabulary in their staff training practices.
