A transnational anti-racist project attempted to advance social justice in both the United States and Africa. Through a collaborative process, African Americans and Africans came together to hold space for one another to learn about racism, colorism, and colonization. The group conducted virtual meetings to understand the dynamics of racism and other forms of discrimination. This study focused mainly on anti-Black racism, which is a global phenomenon that produces adverse life outcomes for Black-identifying individuals. Anti-Black racism affected each community a little differently but in varying degrees. Through critical and guided dialogue and discussion, both populations learned more about each other’s local context and the challenges each group faces. The facilitator created a space safe for participants to share their experiences without invalidation or microaggressions. The project helped create various social justice initiatives in both regions. This intervention not only helped to show that experiences between Black communities around the world overlapped, but it also uncovered the power of group work to rectify systemic injustice. Findings demonstrate that knowledge of anti-Blackness produces empathy and cross-border collaboration. It is both valuable for transnational racial justice and of far-reaching relevance for the future of social justice efforts seeking long-term systemic transformation.

摘要
