This chapter lays the groundwork for understanding the social sciences within the broader scientific framework. It begins by defining science and distinguishing the social sciences from the natural sciences, exploring key questions: What constitutes science and what defines good scientific practice? The chapter examines the inherent complexity of social sciences, the role of theory, and the absence of universal laws, contrasting this with the natural sciences’ reliance on theorems and predictability. It also delves into philosophical underpinnings, addressing concepts like fact, truth, and the scientific method, while questioning assumptions such as rationality and free will in social research.
