This chapter introduces diffraction theory to the extent necessary for understanding X-ray diffraction by crystalline materials. It covers scattering by individual electrons and atoms, as well as by their periodic arrangements—lattices. The chapter presents the Laue equations and Bragg's law, but places primary emphasis on the concept of the reciprocal lattice and the interpretation of diffraction using Ewald’s sphere.
