We describe the reception and influence of Riemannäs text, including the considerations of the notion of space by the physicist Helmholtz, the further development of Riemannian geometry, Einstein’s theory of general relativity, the work of Lie, Weyl and other geometers, the philosophical discussions caused by the ideas of Riemann and Helmholtz, and modern concepts of space.
