Mobile applications are deemed to be an important tool with a significant rise, making their usability crucial for user satisfaction and successful interaction. Understanding cognitive load is essential for designing mobile applications that are easy to use. This paper examines the interaction between cognitive load and mobile application usability by analyzing factors influencing cognitive load. The primary objective is to understand further how cognitive load affects mobile application usability and to provide insights for designing user-friendly applications. It is based on a systematic literature review of articles published between 2019 and 2024 and includes definitions from existing literature. The review covers intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load and their interaction during mobile application use. It also explores how cognitive load impacts learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors, and satisfaction. In conclusion, this paper emphasizes the importance of considering cognitive load factors during the design and implementation of mobile applications.
