Managing participation, creating a sense of community, and providing an equitable learning experience between online and in-person students in a HyFlex course is challenging. Previous studies have highlighted a knowledge gap in students’ acceptance of the Discord application as a learning management system (LMS). Thus, this research investigated undergraduate students’ perceived usefulness and ease of use towards using Discord to manage knowledge and participation in a HyFlex learning environment. Through a convergent mixed methods design, quantitative analyses revealed high perceived usefulness and ease of use among students. Qualitative insights indicated nuanced benefits such as structured channels which enhanced accessibility to information, thread functions which fostered inclusive and deeper learning, and promoted communication between instructor and learners. A few challenges also emerged, including initial confusion due to students’ unfamiliarity with Discord and technical issues that hindered student acceptance of Discord. To maximise the potential of Discord as an LMS in a HyFlex learning setting, educational stakeholders and developers should collaborate to provide quality support, such as user onboarding and addressing usability issues. Future studies could compare the effectiveness of Discord with other learning platforms and investigate educators’ perspectives on integrating Discord into the teaching and learning process.
