Research Trends in Blockchain and Smart Contracts for Agriculture: A Bibliometric Analysis
摘要
Blockchain technology and smart contracts in agriculture have attracted significant attention from researchers and industry experts in recent years, leading to a surge in scholarly publications. This study, aimed at tracking research trends and evaluating the evolution of scholarly work in this area, conducts a bibliometric analysis using data from Scopus, one of the top academic databases. Despite being essential for food production and economic activity, the agriculture sector has been lacking in digital transformation, leading to challenges like inefficiencies in the supply chain due to complexities, resource limitations, and increased demand due to population growth and inclusivity of market players. Blockchain and smart contracts present innovative solutions to these issues. Yet, there is limited understanding of the intellectual landscape in this field and how it can resolve the problems in this sector. This analysis explores publication trends, citation connections, and critical research subjects. The findings reveal a substantial increase in publications since 2018, underscoring the growing recognition of blockchain’s potential to revolutionise agriculture transparency, traceability, and efficiency. The analysis also identifies the central contributing countries, leading journals, and prolific authors, providing a comprehensive overview of the academic landscape. Notable themes include blockchain application in food safety, supply chain management, and sustainability in agriculture. The study emphasises the transformative potential of blockchain and smart contracts, inspiring the audience with the possibilities for the agricultural sector through technological innovation.
