Games are increasingly recognized as a potent tool for motivating behavioral change, particularly in healthcare. This study introduces CuidaMED, a novel piece of software designed to assist patients with chronic conditions in adhering to their treatments and managing their diseases. CuidaMED leverages serious games-interactive platforms with goals beyond mere entertainment-incorporating gamification strategies and a robust technical architecture to foster positive behavioral changes. Beyond its gamified design, CuidaMED stands out by incorporating the latest AI interaction patterns, specifically large language models, to understand and respond to patient needs through natural human language. This allows for the dynamic generation of personalized games that adapt to medium-term healthcare needs, addressing the limitations of static health apps-which often feature static content-with dynamic, adaptive content. Powered by generative AI, these games maintain patient engagement with educational content and treatment adherence. The platform also features a virtual companion, Mary, who provides contextual rewards to encourage patients to follow their treatment plans, reinforcing positive behaviors. Additionally, CuidaMED provides real-time reports to family members and caregivers, alerting them to any significant changes in the patient’s condition. By leveraging the latest AI interaction patterns, including large language models and generative AI, CuidaMED dynamically adapts games to patient needs, enhancing engagement and personalizing treatment adherence. This study explores the design, implementation, and efficacy of CuidaMED, presenting initial results that demonstrate its potential to improve patient engagement and treatment adherence through innovative, AI-powered solutions. The findings highlight the significance of gamification, adaptive content, and serious games in healthcare, supporting patients in achieving better health outcomes over time.
