EFL Saudi College Students’ Reading Comprehension of Religious Texts: Site of Tolerance or Struggle?
摘要
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of first (L1) and second (L2) language group discussions on the reading comprehension of religious texts (Quran and Bible) by EFL college-level Saudi students. Methods in this study include data from students’ group discussions and written recalls. The L1 Group read Quranic and Biblical texts in English and discussed them in Arabic, then produced free-written recalls. The L2 Group read and discussed the same Quranic and Biblical texts only in English, then produced written recalls. The data was analyzed through students’ group discussions and written recalls. Results offered insights into how and why students varied in their comprehension perceptions of religious texts according to the languages they used in group discussions. Future recommendations shed light on language-specific skills related to reading comprehension as well as interpersonal skills such as religious tolerance and cultural coexistence (Todorov 2010).
