Textbook evaluation research is an important component of second language teaching and learning. It has grown dramatically in Saudi Arabia, and advanced our knowledge of numerous aspects of textbooks. However, no systematic review of textbook research exists. Of particular concern is what areas have been examined and what areas have not been explored. Therefore, this study examined English textbook evaluation research conducted in Saudi Arabia between 1920 and 2020s. The use of electronic search engines such Google Scholar enabled the collection of 47 studies for analysis. The findings demonstrate one area has been adequately explored in the majority of past textbook studies. This area examined general aspects of textbooks using a Likert checklist method. It educates professionals about strengths and drawbacks of textbooks. However, three research areas were neglected: examining language skills, examining linguistic knowledge, and examining language use. The findings offer a contribution to textbook evaluation research since it is the first study to undertake a systematic review in Saudi Arabia. It lays the groundwork for future research through displaying gaps of textbook studies.

摘要
