Culturally Responsive Approaches to Assessment and Case Conceptualization
摘要
Culturally responsive assessment is a benchmark for ethical clinical practice across fields of mental health and key to promoting treatment engagement. When assessing for anxiety, clinicians must attend to their own intersecting identities, exploring areas of privilege and oppression and the ways these identities shape their worldview and approach to therapy. This process is ongoing and supports clinicians in noticing, understanding, and eradicating bias they may bring to the assessment process. Secondly, clinicians must be willing to recognize the cultural context of their clients and value clients’ experiences as equally important and valid. Moreover, culturally responsive anxiety assessment includes the integration of evidence-based approaches and cultural context including assessment of the role of identity-based experiences. This chapter reviews cultural and identity factors that affect treatment access and engagement as well as factors to consider when conducting culturally responsive assessment for anxiety and related disorders.
