Building a Positive Racial and Ethnic Identity to Support Treatment Engagement
摘要
People of color underutilize mental health care compared to the general population. For therapists, an understanding of ethnic and racial identity is crucial as it relates to the ability to work well with an increasingly diverse client population with various ethnic and racial identities, leading to a strong therapeutic alliance and improved engagement in treatment. This chapter describes models of ethnoracial identity development and how various stages can impact the treatment engagement process. The impact of racism in the development of anxiety disorders is discussed with examples. It also describes how therapists can support the formation of a healthy, positive ethnoracial identity in clients to foster engagement in therapy.
