Critical Insights into Waqf Research: A Bibliometric Review
摘要
Waqf (Islamic endowment) has recently attracted an increasing scholarly attention due to its social and economic impact as well as its potential in sustainable development. This bibliometric review aims to analyse the entire body of Waqf literature published worldwide. Using the Scopus database as the sole data source, a total of 766 publications have been retrieved, indexed and examined. Key findings are: the rapid increase in the literature of Waqf since the early 2000s; the most popular countries of origin are Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey, playing an active role in Waqf studies; publications on Waqf are predominantly in English, whereas studies in other languages have only marginal contributions; the most cited articles are mostly related to the themes of ‘Waqf management’, ‘Islamic finance’ and ‘sustainable development’, demonstrating the diverse applications and governance of Waqf from the perspective of contemporary economic and social issues. Bibliometric review is an essential tool for providing a global perspective of the state of research within a given discipline. The evidences revealed here will attract more scholars to produce high-quality studies and build a broader base for the growth of Waqf studies.
