Evaluating Soundscape Perception and Visitation Pattern in High Traffic Urban Commercial Streets in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The soundscape, as a pivotal element within the urban design and planning, has garnered significant scholarly attention. This study explores the soundscape perception and visitation pattern in urban high traffic commercial streets in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The survey collected data from 411 respondents selected through random sampling. The most preferred soundscape statements were subjected to descriptive analysis to establish the soundscape in the urban commercial streets that influences the user’s preference ratings. The result shown that among all the components, ‘eventfulness’ was rated higher by the respondents. The five most preferred soundscape statements are towards the ‘eventfulness’ and ‘appropriateness’ components. The key findings conclude soundscapes are appraised according to their potential based on the familiarity. It is assumed that familiarity is an essential component of scenic sound quality, and a setting with a great diversity would receive higher ratings because it enhances the respondents’ preferences to understand the soundscape. In addition, the research found that the soundscape likely matched users’ visit motives and desired outcomes, explaining the high pleasantness ratings. The results provide valuable insights for urban planners for the soundscape criteria development in urban commercial streets.
