Artificial Intelligence in the Conservation of Heritage Buildings: A Review of Current Practices
摘要
The emergence of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, Virtual Reality, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the way architects approach their profession, creating new opportunities for innovation and problem-solving. Although there is a significant amount of literature on AI and modern architecture, limited information is known regarding how AI is integrated with cultural heritage architecture, especially in Malaysia. Thus, this study aims to identify the role of AI in preserving heritage architecture with an emphasis on the best current practices. The study method was conducted in three phases: a literature search in different databases, keywords identification for the search, and a review of the selected papers. The results revealed seven (7) applications of AI for heritage preservation: Image Restoration, Structural Inspection, Automated 3D Modelling, Robotic Application, Digital Tourism, Advanced Documentation and History Education. In summary, this paper has demonstrated the significant contribution of Artificial Intelligence in transforming building conservation practice. However, the use of AI in the Malaysia is relatively low and this issue opens up new avenues for further research.
