This chapter puts into perspective the establishment of the Global Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum, launched in April 2022 as a major initiative to promote trusted cross-border flows of personal data. The importance of the Global CBPR Forum should not be underestimated. Since its establishment, it has already attracted the attention of at least a dozen countries worldwide. The Forum is expected to build upon the APEC CBPR System. However, policy and scholarly analysis on the functioning and success of this system is scarce. This article seeks to fill this gap by explaining the origins, functioning and performance of APEC CBPR System so far. The discussion of these aspects serves a constructive purpose: to future-proof the Global CBPR Forum and its associated privacy certification. Considering the relevance of facilitated cross-border data flows for the digital economy, the analysis of the Global CBPR Forum in light of its predecessor is not only important but necessary to implement global data privacy certification systems on the ground.
