Black and Indigenous youth of color are more likely to encounter child protection services, law enforcement, and homelessness. For example, more than 50% of Black minors will be involved in an abuse or neglect investigation before turning 18 years old; they are five times more likely to be arrested for person-related crimes and nine times more likely to receive an adult prison sentence as compared to White youth involved in similar crimes. Youth of color disproportionately have negative experiences with systems that are designed to support them. Experiences of oppression and systemic racism create transgenerational trauma and social, emotional, and economic disadvantages that negatively impact the family system. This chapter addresses history, best practices, and therapeutic techniques that can help social workers working with youth involved in child welfare, juvenile justice, and/or homelessness systems of care.
