The Power of the Pause: Preparing Students for Critical Reflection
摘要
Critical reflection includes looking inward, finding a deeper meaning to experiences, and scrutinizing power structures that influence the nuances of relationships. In social work practice, this process is vital for practitioners as it compels them to examine their biases, and positionality while interacting with vulnerable communities and systems they navigate. Many students beginning their graduate social work journey have not actively experienced this critical reflective process prior to engaging in their practicum environment. The purpose of this chapter is to present a useful and accessible anti-oppressive tool. The Power of the Pause is an anti-oppressive tool embedded within a preparatory lab designed to help students employ critical reflection as they embark on the uncertainty of their practicum settings. A case composite of common student presentations in which the Power of the Pause enhances the learning process, along with reflection questions aimed at students, educators, and new practitioners, will be included.
