The American prison system is inherently traumatizing and oppressive in nature. Forensic social workers are tasked with serving incarcerated female clients and challenging correctional systems in a manner that aligns with social justice values. New social workers will glean an understanding of the cycle of re-traumatization the American prison system poses for women, especially women of color. A composite case study portraying some of the oppressions and traumas experienced by incarcerated women will give voice to those who have been voiceless. Suggested practices for implementation for a trauma-informed and an anti-oppressive approach for correctional social workers will be reviewed.
