In addressing the challenges faced by under-resourced universities and schools in Indonesia, particularly in English language education, it is crucial to explore innovative pedagogical approaches that enhance learning outcomes. One effective method involves integrating emotional engagement with narrative texts, as demonstrated in a pilot project conducted at a private Islamic boarding school in Central Java. This project focused on using a lesson plan that incorporated reading for emotion, allowing junior high school students to not only grasp the structure and moral values of narratives but also to express their understanding creatively. By engaging students in a three-part activity—reading with emotion, coding the original text, and recreating the story—this approach fostered deeper comprehension and increased English proficiency. Such pedagogical strategies are vital in transforming the educational experiences of students in under-resourced contexts, ultimately empowering them to become more proficient in their language skills.
