Few who study human evolutionary biology would defend a view of life that pits nature versus nurture. However, moving on without continuing to seek the primary driver of the evolution of a trait, or without aiming to disentangle the relative importance of each factor in a biocultural phenomenon, has been a challenge for researchers, writers, and educators because scientists are interested in measurable causes. When evolving traits of scientifc interest are related to sex and/or gender, then gender/sex entanglement theory will be imperative for escaping the legacy of nature versus nurture. But that progress means rethinking research questions; creating clever, careful, and ever-complex study designs; employing new data collection and analytic methods; and incorporating diverse qualitative, theoretical, and philosophical perspectives. Humbly, and in lieu of providing instructions for such a path forward, this chapter argues that practitioners, educators, and communicators of human evolutionary biology should (continue to) endeavor to carve such a path.
