The Azerbaijan Republic is the largest country in the South Caucasus region, located at the juncture of South-Eastern Europe and South-West Asia with an area of 86,600 km2, and has a population of more than 10.0 million people. It shares borders with the Caspian Sea to the east (825 km), Russia to the north (390 km), Georgia to the northwest (480 km), Armenia to the west (1007 km), Iran to the south (765 km) and Turkey (15 km) in the south-west (Fig. 1).
