The area of Dagestan is 50.3 thousand km2. Its territory covers the eastern part of the northern macro slope of the Greater Caucasus. The north occupies the southwestern part of the vast Caspian lowland bounded by the Kuma River. From the east, Dagestan is washed by the Caspian Sea (the coastline is 530 km long). It borders on the Republic of Kalmykia to the north and Stavropol Krai and the Chechen Republic to the west. The southern border of Dagestan with Georgia and Azerbaijan runs along the high mountain ranges of the Greater Caucasus and the Samur River (Fig. 1) (Aliev et al. 2023).
