Have you ever thought about the loss of cultural components due to climate change? If your response is no so you’re in the same boat as most people. The loss of cultural heritage, knowledge, identity, traditions, ways of living together, languages, spirituality and emotions are understandably of a huge concern to those affected. As a result of climate change, glacier melt in Himalaya, in the Dhye Village 17 out of 26 families have decided to move out of the village because they are no longer able to raise yaks, which signifies the loss of culture, communal identity, and sense of place. Protecting culture components, particularly in vulnerable communities, from the effects of climate change requires us to be more aware. One of the rays of hope that emerged from COP28 was the increasing acknowledgement of the significance of cultural heritage and cultural rights in climate actions and responses. But to date, there is no clear plan for how to recognize the key issue of these non-economic/non-physical losses. Focusing on non-economic and non-physical losses and damages caused by climate change is crucial at this point of time.
