This research addresses the critical imperative of sustainable water management in agriculture, with a specific focus on the utilization of low-cost smart irrigation tools, especially within the Moroccan context. Given the escalating concerns surrounding water scarcity and climate change, the quest for practical and economical solutions to optimize irrigation becomes paramount. While previous studies have touched upon smart irrigation, our contribution lies in a comprehensive comparative analysis across African countries, shedding light on region-specific opportunities and challenges. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted field studies and collected data through low-cost sensor technologies. Field studies were executed in Morocco, leveraging affordable sensor devices to gather data on soil moisture levels and crop performance. Statistical analysis was then applied to assess the efficacy of smart irrigation tools in enhancing water usage efficiency for agricultural practices. Our findings reveal a substantial improvement in water use efficiency, particularly through sensor-based low-cost smart irrigation tools, across diverse agricultural landscapes in Morocco. The comparative analysis conducted across multiple African countries uncovered variations in the adaptability and limitations of these tools, providing nuanced insights into their practical implications. The study suggests that the affordability and adaptability of smart irrigation tools hold promising potential for fostering sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, it delves into the social implications, emphasizing the prospect of socio-economic empowerment within local communities through enhanced agricultural practices. The paper discusses challenges impeding widespread adoption, offering valuable insights for policymakers and researchers interested in sustainable water resource management. In conclusion, our research underscores the significance of low-cost smart irrigation tools in addressing water management challenges in agriculture. The comparative analysis provides novel insights, guiding future research and policy initiatives towards integrated water resources management, ultimately promoting sustainable agricultural practices amidst climate change and resource scarcity.
