Exploring the Feasibility of Virtual Reality in Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: Medical Perspectives on Motion Health VR

Background: The increasing prevalence of strokes has driven the search for innovative rehabilitation methods. Immersive virtual reality (VR), especially those games and applications that are custom-built for rehabilitation purposes offers an interactive and motivating approach for therapy adherence. The perception and acceptance of physiotherapists are crucial for its implementation, and therefore this should be further investigated. Objective: To evaluate the attitudes and perceptions of medical physiotherapists regarding the feasibility and effectiveness of a custom-built VR game called Motion Health VR for post-stroke rehabilitation. Methodology: A multiple-choice questionnaire was administered to 73 medical doctors who saw or experienced the VR game, and a focus group was conducted with 4 physiotherapists to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on the utility, accessibility, costs, and recommendations of Motion Health VR. Results: VR was widely accepted as a complementary tool in post-stroke rehabilitation. Motion Health VR was considered beneficial in incentivizing patient participation, with interest in its clinical incorporation despite concerns about costs and accessibility. Physiotherapists saw the potential for its integration into rehabilitation programs, highlighting its gameplay and immersion, although they noted limitations due to costs and patient spasticity. Conclusion: Motion Health VR showed significant potential to complement post-stroke rehabilitation, with positive reception from physiotherapists and physiathers. Challenges include improving access, cost, and training in VR to optimize rehabilitation outcomes.
