This chapter reviews the bacterial catabolism of sugars by glycolysis, Embden–Meyerhof pathway, Entner–Doudoroff pathway, and pentose phosphoketolase pathway. Pathways/A discussion of the Stickland and phosphoroclastic reactions are included. The fermentation process employed by specific groups of bacteria are provided and fermentation balances are reviewed. Enzymology of C-1 metabolism is discussed for CO2 and CO fixation and metabolism of methane, methanol, and formaldehyde are presented. The unique enzymology of methane production by archaea is provided.
