This chapter examines the forms of defiance servants expressed both at work and in their personal lives, drawing on first-hand testimonies such as letters, oral histories and memoirs along with evidence from print media. It opens with a discussion of the social and cultural opportunities that enabled young women to distance themselves from their jobs, avoiding control even if only for brief periods. The next section considers the ways in which servants sought to maintain their dignity at work, particularly by avoiding tasks they regarded as beyond their role. Attention then turns to the more explicit class consciousness expressed in servants’ letters to the printed press. The chapter concludes by exploring how detachment from their work could, at times, limit servants’ willingness or ability to assert their rights.
