The use of gender-fair language is a highly debated and controversial issue in German-speaking countries, which has led politicians to initiate language policies and specific laws that prohibit the use of certain forms of gender-fair language in administrative contexts. In the debate, various terms such as gendergerechte, geschlechtergerechte and geschlechtsneutrale Sprache are used side by side, often synonymously, without distinguishing between them conceptually. However, it is important to understand the terminological landscape and its social implications. Therefore, this chapter aims to provide more conceptual clarity on the different terms used in the German-speaking debate. To this end, the chapter gives a brief overview of the German terms and concepts of Geschlecht, Gender, and Genus. It then closely examines the various German adjectives of the type ‘gender-fair’, using a corpus-based and dictionary-based analyses, with the aim of ultimately differentiating the respective terms and being able to position them on the scale of inclusion of all gender identities, feminisation, and neutralisation.
