The European Moon Analog LUNA

After several successful decades of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) flights, the human spaceflight community is now preparing for the next generation of scientific exploration missions to the Moon. In contrast to the Apollo program, current efforts are aimed at exploring and using the lunar surface more sustainably and in a more permanent fashion, where also commercial aspects and partners will play a major role. This shift has created an increased demand for test facilities that can simulate lunar surface conditions. To address this need, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have joined forces to build an indoor analog facility in Cologne, named LUNA. Located on the DLR campus and next to the European Astronaut Centre (EAC), LUNA was inaugurated in late September 2024. The most prominent element of the facility is a large regolith testbed designed for conducting robotic and astronautical experiments. Additional features of the facility include a sun simulator, various regolith surface design options, a gravity offloading system, and ground segment infrastructure. The work presented in this paper outlines the capabilities of the hall and the current status of the project. Aimed at becoming a low-barrier entry facility open for the large lunar scientific community, LUNA will also serve as a hub for demonstrating capabilities in the framework of In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) techniques.
