One of the conditions for creating human settlements on Mars or Moon is independence from Earth, which includes food production. Both of those celestial bodies’ surfaces are barren and unable to support crops as well as Earth’s soil. In order to investigate the potential of regolith-like soil, samples from different Earth locations were taken: Etna, Dahab, and the Arctic, and divided into solid phases and extracts. Then, radish seeds were planted on the samples mixed with an agar substrate and provided with a small amount of fertilizer. The seeds grew for 14 days, after which the plants were harvested and measured. Observed plant growth encourages further research into the use of terrestrial regoliths for growing food and taking a deeper look into their interaction with different types of plants. The experiment took place at the Analog Astronaut Training Center (AATC) during the Athena space analog mission.
