Optimisation of Knit Dyehouse: Pathways Towards ‘Zero’ Water Requirements

The Textile and Apparel industry has been important in developing Bangladesh’s economy. Textile wet processing industry is considered the backward linkage of the apparel industry, and the most significant regarding water, energy, chemical consumption, reprocessing, and productivity. Thus, the optimisation of any dyehouse for textile processing has been a ‘key challenge’ for many dyehouse managers. Depending on the production process, textile dyeing can be divided into continuous, semicontinuous, or exhaust methods. It can also be classified as knit dyeing, woven dyeing, yarn dyeing, denim dyeing, and garment dyeing/washing based on the colouration of products. Amongst these, woven and denim dyeing is more technology-driven, needing a huge machine setup with major investments. On the other hand, knit, yarn, and garment washing are much more skill-oriented. In this chapter, based on extensive experiences in the Bangladesh knit dyeing industry, various practical optimisation techniques for dyeing are discussed, a path that will lead to the least amount, aka ‘Zero’ water requirements.
