Artificial Intelligence in Social Work to Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a transformative force across various domains, with social work and environmental sustainability being no exception. The contemporary mainstream integration of AI technologies into social work practice may also lead to innovative solutions to complex challenges involving the environment. This chapter explores the potential of AI-driven approaches enhancing environmental sustainability through socially responsible interventions. It examines the intersection of AI, social work, and sustainable development, highlighting how predictive analytics, machine learning, and data-driven insights can empower social workers in environmental advocacy and resource management. The relation between the social work and the AI is increasing day by due to a wide range of data being generated from a lot of development works. The chapter also delves into ethical and social considerations, emphasizing the need for fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems to prevent bias and ensure equitable outcomes. Challenges such as technical limitations, resource constraints, and regulatory barriers are discussed, alongside recommendations to foster collaboration between AI researchers, social work practitioners, and policymakers. The chapter concludes by outlining future directions and opportunities to harness AI innovations for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By integrating AI into social work frameworks, this interdisciplinary approach can create a more sustainable and socially just world, where technology serves as a catalyst for environmental stewardship and community well-being.
