Internet of Things (IoT) and Environmental Monitoring: A Systematic Literature Review

The Internet of things (IoT) refers to the collection of physical devices that receive and transfer data over wireless networks. This paper presents the most important work using the IoT in environmental monitoring, specifically in the fields of land use, forest management, agriculture, urban environments, and climate. The text also examines how artificial intelligence (AI) enhances IoT systems by improving data analysis and decision-making processes, which are crucial for effective environmental monitoring and management. The studies have mainly focused on the application of this technology in urban and agricultural environments where humans live or where they derive the greatest economic benefit. The works generally value using the IoT for environmental monitoring because this technology may potentially be scaled up to permanently monitor many areas and improve environmental management. There are significant gaps in the practical application and existing studies regarding the IoT and land use cover change. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether applying the IoT and improving its application for ongoing environmental monitoring in areas of special interest or high risk is a worthwhile goal.
