In Germany, the majority of companies are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These companies are typically less well known as players in the field of digital marketing. However, they are strongly affected by the impacts of digitalization in marketing and could fundamentally also benefit from the advantages of digital marketing. At Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences (HSHL), the project “Digital.Connected.” examined the use of digital customer interfaces by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using companies in the region of Eastern Westphalia and the city of Dortmund in Germany as examples. One result was that despite the Corona crisis, little has changed in digital customer contact among medium-sized companies. Even small and medium-sized companies will now and in the future have no choice but to invest much more in digital know-how among staff and in IT tools. This article outlines the present obstacles SMEs face in digital marketing and presents potential strategies for successfully adapting to the digital marketing landscape.
