Challenges in Designing and Adopting Robotic Rehabilitation Systems

Robotic rehabilitation devices have proved to be a promising tool for improving the recovery process of people with motor disabilities. By providing targeted and repetitive therapy, these devices can accelerate rehabilitation and reduce dependence on healthcare professionals. This paper explores the key considerations for the design and clinical application of robotic rehabilitation systems. We will explore the anatomical and functional requirements for effective device design, highlighting the importance of mimicking human movement patterns. We will also present specific examples of robotic devices developed by our research group, demonstrating the potential of these technologies in real world settings. Despite significant progress, challenges such as high costs, technical limitations, and lack of sound clinical evidence prevent widespread adoption. To bridge this gap, increased investment in research and development, together with supportive policies, is key to achieving the full potential of robotic rehabilitation and improving patient outcomes.
