The American Society of Extracorporeal Technology (AmSECT) Standards and Guidelines emphasize the importance of detailed perfusion record-keeping, which is an integral part of a patient’s permanent medical record. This includes patient information, procedural details, physiological parameters, and perfusionist signatures, typically charted every 15 minutes and during significant changes. Technological advancements have resulted in electronic charting systems that streamline record-keeping, ensure data accuracy, and enhance communication by automatically aggregating data from various devices. In addition, electronic charting systems enhance efficiency, offer insights into cardiopulmonary bypass trends, and improve the safety of perfusion practices. While AmSECT provides foundational standards for perfusion documentation, perfusionists must also adhere to individual institutional policies, which may supersede AmSECT guidelines, to maintain precision and integrity in documentation, considering the potential legal implications.
