Towards an Innovative Urostomy Bag Filling Monitoring System with Hall Effect Sensors

One of the key challenges faced by urostomy patients is the lack of physiological feedback when their bag is filling, particularly during sleep, leaving them unaware if the bag is overfilling. The risk of urine spillage presents significant difficulties, including physical discomfort, social anxiety in public settings, and disrupted sleep. This work aims to address the UN sustainable development goal of well-being and quality of life by addressing the unmet needs of urostomy patients through the development of a smart urostomy bag monitoring system that provides real-time sensory feedback and prevents accidental leakage caused by overfilling. The system offers both vibratory and audible alerts to accommodate the diverse needs of patients in their daily life. The smart device consists of a reusable sleeve equipped with Hall effect sensors that accurately measure the ostomy pouch's deformation as it fills. With a 95% accurate two-level warning system, this solution ensures timely alerts, preventing spillage and thereby reducing the inequalities associated with the use of traditional, sensorless stoma bags.
