Ability Mining of Manipulation Using Lower Limb Motion - Comparison with Upper Limb Using Isotonic-Rate Method

The research field “Ability mining” aims to discover previously unknown abilities of human by investigating human work under conditions different from everyday life. This study quantitatively evaluated the ability to manipulate with the lower limb as an ability mining research and compared it with the ability of the upper limb. Subjects conducted games in a virtual space, where the operation object is operated by isotonic-rate control method. The work speed of the lower limb was about 95% of that of the upper limb for 1DOF game and about 89% for 3DOF game. The difference between the lower limb and upper limb became more obvious in 3DOF operation than in 1DOF operation. In 3DOF operation, the work speed and path length ratio were in the 80% range, but the subjective operability was in the 60% range when the lower limb operation was compared with the upper limb. The results suggest that the ability of the lower limb is more likely to be rated lower in subjective evaluation than in objective performance, such as speed and accuracy of work.
