This chapter defines the concepts of “sustainability” and “sustainable development.” An account of the historical development of sustainability and sustainable development concepts is provided. Further, the chapter talks about the role of higher education in promoting sustainability. The term “sustainable internationalization” is defined. The purpose-driven leadership framework is presented as a way to frame university initiatives in sustainable internationalization.
