Water Resources and Bioenergy

The intersection of bioenergy production and water resources presents a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires careful consideration and sustainable management. The impact assessment at the bioenergy-water nexus highlights the crucial role water plays in bioenergy development and the need to address local and regional water implications. Alternative energy sources and carbon capture and sequestration processes are essential to cope with the immense global challenges of resource scarcity and climate change. Biomass is a potential alternative carbon-based fuel that can reduce the environmental impacts of various applications. Many countries have increased the production of biomass crops for use as bioenergy sources. Biomass can include wood, food crops, energy crops, waste from forests, yards, or farms, and even municipal solid waste. Bioenergy can be converted into fuels, heat, electricity, and products, which can be used in various applications, such as heating, electricity generation, transportation, and bio-products. Applying bioenergy which comes from biomass crops, is a risk to food insecurity, and causes water scarcity for crop irrigation. This study aims to review recent documents on the relationship between the cultivation of biomass crops and the amount of water exploited, thereby gaining a more scientific perspective on this link.
