Investigating the Potential of Climate-Smart Pest Management in Sustainable Agriculture

Climate change poses significant challenges to sustainable agriculture and innovative pest management approaches. Climate Smart Pest Management (CSPM) integrates climate adaptation and mitigation practices with pest management, aiming to reduce pest-related issues with minimal environmental impact. This chapter includes different CSPM techniques, including climate-resilient crop varieties, biological control agents, habitat manipulation, and predictive modeling for pest outbreaks. It also emphasizes the role of advanced technologies, such as remote sensing and precision agriculture, in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of CSPM. The implementation requirements of CSPM include a multi-stakeholder approach, researchers, policymakers, and extension services. It also highlights the importance of tailored CSPM strategies considering pest dynamics, local climate conditions, and socio-economic factors. Additionally, it identifies critical barriers to adoption, such as limited awareness, financial constraints, and inadequate policies. Recommendations for overcoming these challenges include increasing investment in research and development, training, fostering collaborative networks, and promoting farmer education. Overall, this chapter also underscores the potential of CSPM as a vital component of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, contributing to food security and climate change resilience.
