The pulp and paper industry integrates a sequence of transformation activities that range from the development of forest plantations to the production of pulp and different types of paper and paperboard. Wood fibers, the chief raw material for papermaking, mainly comprise cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. A pulping process must individualize the fibers to make paper or board. While cellulosic pulp is the fibrous raw material to produce paper (intermediate product), paper is the final product, manufactured with various pulps and other compounds (additives) by intertwining the fibers and forming a compact material. Paper can be manufactured with virgin fibers (never used before) or secondary fibers (from recovered paper). The pulp and paper industry is currently seen as a whole: from the plantation to the consumers.
